Bangladesh Election Commission prepares for local government polls

The Election Commission of Bangladesh is preparing to hold local government elections, starting with union parishads, to address the administrative vacuum left after the July 2024 uprising. Following the removal of many previous representatives, many local bodies have operated without elected officials for nearly two years. To expedite the process, the commission has already procured necessary materials, including millions of marking and official seals, during the previous parliamentary election cycle. The commission has decided to conduct these elections using paper ballots and will not utilize postal ballots.

Separately, Mahfuz Alam, a former advisor to the interim government, emphasized the need for national stability over the coming years. He noted that maintaining investor confidence and implementing state and economic reforms are essential to fulfilling the aspirations of the July movement. Alam stressed that the country must balance stability with deep-seated reforms to prevent the state from becoming either fragile or fascist.
