Bangladesh faces climate migration risks and economic instability
Bangladesh is facing a dual crisis involving ecological displacement and fragile economic stability. A report by the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) highlights how climate-driven disasters, such as floods and cyclones, are creating a pipeline for human trafficking. As rural populations are displaced by environmental crises, many fall victim to unregulated smugglers and criminal networks while attempting to migrate for labor.
Simultaneously, the nation is navigating a protracted and fragile economic recovery. According to an analysis by the Centre for Policy Dialogue (CPD), the government faces structural weaknesses including weak revenue mobilization, fragile banking sectors, and subdued investment. While remittances from the 7.4 million citizens working abroad contribute approximately 11 per cent of the GDP, the overall economic outlook remains constrained by fiscal limitations and the need for coordinated institutional reforms.
