Bangladesh faces power disruptions at 62 plants

Bangladesh is experiencing increased load-shedding and electricity disruptions due to rising demand from hot weather and a shortage of fuel sources. Production at 62 power plants was disrupted recently, with 20 plants halting production entirely and others operating at limited capacity.

The crisis is driven by an ongoing gas shortage, alongside insufficient supplies of coal and liquid fuel. Technical faults at two major power plants and routine maintenance have further strained the grid. While load-shedding was initially limited to areas outside Dhaka, it has expanded to include the capital city since mid-August.

Electricity distribution in Dhaka is managed by DPDC and DESCO. Residents have reported multiple daily outages, leading to concerns regarding generator failures and domestic gas shortages.
