Bangladesh fertilizer dealer appointments face corruption allegations

Allegations of widespread corruption and irregularities have surfaced regarding the appointment of new fertilizer dealers in Bangladesh. Critics claim that many appointments were made based on political affiliations rather than merit, including relatives of political leaders and government officials. Concerns have been raised that many new dealers lack prior experience in fertilizer sales and do not possess their own warehouses, potentially leading to artificial shortages and price manipulation.

Farmers in several regions, including Lalmonirhat, Faridpur, and Chapainawabganj, have reported difficulties accessing fertilizer at government-mandated prices. Some have resorted to highway blockades to demand supplies, while others report being unable to find fertilizer despite claims of sufficient national stocks. There are also reports of black marketing and dealers prioritizing specific individuals over others.

In response to the controversy, a three-member parliamentary standing committee has formed an investigation and ordered a suspension of appointments in affected areas. While the Department of Agricultural Extension maintains that all appointments followed official guidelines, the Agriculture Minister has promised to revoke dealerships if evidence of irregularities is found.
