Bangladesh fishermen catch 46 maunds of Hilsa worth 4.85 million BDT

Fishermen in the Bay of Bengal near Kuakata, Bangladesh, captured a significant haul of 46 maunds (approximately 1,700–1,800 kg) of Hilsa fish in a single net cast. The catch, caught by the trawler FB Junaid on August 6 near the Payra Sea Port buoy, was sold via auction at the Mahipur Fish Port for 4.85 million BDT.

The catch consisted of two main size categories: 24 maunds of Hilsa weighing 1 kg or more, sold at 115,000 BDT per maund, and 22 maunds of Hilsa weighing between 800 and 900 grams, sold at 95,000 BDT per maund. This substantial haul provides relief to local fishermen who have faced recent losses due to a shortage of Hilsa in the sea.

While fisheries experts note that a single large catch is not a definitive indicator of long-term abundance, local officials suggest that continued rainfall may lead to more significant catches in the near future.
