Bangladesh food prices rise amid supply shortages and energy crisis

Rising costs and supply shortages are driving up food prices in Bangladesh. Heavy rainfall in various districts has reduced the supply of vegetables to wholesale markets, leading to price increases in Dhaka. Notable hikes include eggplant, which rose to 140 BDT per kg, and green chilies, which are selling at 160 BDT per kg. Poultry prices for Sonali chicken have also seen a slight increase due to supply constraints.

In addition to fresh produce, the Bangladesh Bread, Biscuit and Confectionery Manufacturers Association has announced that prices for all bakery products will increase by up to 20 percent starting September 12. The association cited rising costs of essential raw materials—such as edible oil, flour, and sugar—alongside severe gas and electricity shortages. Manufacturers stated that these combined factors have made it difficult to sustain operations at current price points, warning that small and medium entrepreneurs may be forced to close without government assistance.
