Bangladesh government announces new pay scale for civil servants

The Bangladesh government has issued a gazette notification for the National Pay Scale 2026, significantly increasing basic salaries for government employees and pensioners. The new structure, effective retrospectively from July 1, implements salary hikes in three distinct phases.

Under the new scale, basic pay for grades 1 to 11 will increase by 100 percent, while grades 12 to 20 will see increases ranging from 115 to 142 percent. The minimum basic salary is set at Tk20,000 for the 20th grade, while the maximum reaches Tk1,72,000 for top-tier officials such as the Cabinet Secretary.

The implementation follows a phased approach: - From July 1 to December 31, 2026, grade 9 and above officials will receive 40 percent of the additional basic pay, while grades 10 to 20 will receive 50 percent. - From January 1 to June 30, 2027, grade 9 and above will receive 70 percent of the increase, and grades 10 to 20 will receive 75 percent. - The full basic pay increase takes effect on July 1, 2027, with all other allowances becoming effective on January 1, 2028.

Pensioners will also receive phased increases across five bands. Those receiving a net monthly pension of Tk9,000 or less will see a 100 percent increase, while those receiving higher amounts will see increases ranging from 55 to 75 percent.
