Bangladesh High Court issues verdicts in Nusrat Rafi and Ashia murder cases

The High Court of Bangladesh has delivered verdicts on two major murder cases involving the rape and killing of minors.

In the Nusrat Jahan Rafi case, which occurred in April 2019, the appellate court upheld the death sentences for former principal Siraj Ud-Doula and one accomplice. The court also modified the sentences for four other convicts, who received life imprisonment, while ten others were acquitted. The case involved the murder of the 19-year-old student after she reported sexual harassment by the madrasah principal.

In a separate case involving the rape and murder of an eight-year-old girl named Ashia in Magura, the High Court addressed the death reference and appeal for the primary accused, Hitu Sheikh. Sheikh had previously been sentenced to death by a lower court for the crime. The judicial proceedings for the Ashia case were noted for their rapid completion in the lower court.
