Bangladesh honors teachers amid promotion disputes

On World Teachers' Day, the Bangladesh government is honoring 101 distinguished teachers across various sectors, including primary, secondary, college, and university levels. Each recipient will receive 200,000 BDT, a crest, and a certificate of honor during a ceremony organized by the Ministry of Education.

However, the celebrations coincide with ongoing grievances among educators regarding promotion stagnation. Within the BCS General Education Cadre, thousands of lecturers face a lack of advancement opportunities to the position of assistant professor. While departmental promotion committee meetings were held in September, official orders have yet to be issued due to a shortage of vacant posts and the lack of creation of supernumerary positions. Currently, there are 9,782 lecturers but only 4,451 available assistant professor posts, leaving many qualified educators without a path for professional growth.
