Bangladesh Information Minister denies intent to control media
Bangladesh Information and Broadcasting Minister Andalib Rahman Partha stated during a weekly briefing at the Secretariat that the government has no intention of controlling the media or restricting press freedom. He contrasted the current administration with the previous 17 years of governance, which he characterized as being resistant to criticism.
During the briefing, the Minister also addressed concerns regarding cultural events and concerts. He clarified that the government does not aim to obstruct cultural activities, noting that instances of concert cancellations are often due to security concerns rather than a lack of cooperation.
Additionally, Partha criticized ‘intellectual fascism,’ calling for the social boycott of media outlets that promote or support such ideologies. Prime Minister’s Information and Broadcasting Adviser Zahid ur Rahman noted that while some isolated incidents occur, there has been a ‘dramatic’ improvement in the environment compared to the period following August 5.
