Bangladesh Interior Minister orders police reform by December 2026

Bangladesh Interior Minister Salahuddin Ahmed has directed the police force to implement visible changes and improve accountability by December 31, 2026. Speaking at the Police Week 2026 medal ceremony in Rajarbagh, the Minister emphasized a new policy of “punishment-reward” to drive performance.

Ahmed stated that while officers who perform well will be rewarded, those who fail in their duties, violate discipline, or engage in criminal activity will face both departmental action and criminal prosecution. He noted that legal proceedings will be pursued if evidence of criminal conduct is found, rather than limiting consequences to internal disciplinary measures.

The Minister addressed the historical misuse of the police for political purposes, urging officers to move away from following illegal orders and instead serve the public. He stressed that the police must reflect the aspirations for change following the 2024 student-led movement, noting that the public expects a police force that is democratic and transparent rather than one that acts in an undemocratic manner.
