India-Bangladesh relations face tension over extradition and trade

Diplomatic tensions between Bangladesh and India have escalated as Dhaka links a potential visit by Prime Minister Tarique Rahman to the extradition of former leader Sheikh Hasina. The Bangladesh Ministry of Foreign Affairs has stated that India must create a “propitious environment” for the visit by addressing outstanding extradition requests for Hasina and other fugitives.

In response, India’s Ministry of External Affairs noted that extradition requests are being examined within existing legal frameworks. Indian High Commissioner Dinesh Trivedi expressed optimism, describing the potential visit as a “golden chapter” in bilateral relations and emphasizing shared aspirations between the two nations.

Parallel to these political tensions, business leaders are seeking to deepen economic ties. The Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) has proposed joint task forces to focus on digital transformation and infrastructure investment in Bangladesh. Discussions also highlighted the need for improved logistics at land ports like Benapole to reduce trade costs and the ongoing assessment of India's ability to provide additional fuel to Bangladesh to assist with its energy crisis.
