Bangladesh mandates rooftop solar for Zila Parishad buildings

The government has mandated the installation of rooftop solar power systems on all Zila Parishad buildings nationwide. According to a notification from the Local Government Division, the project aims to promote sustainable energy and reduce electricity consumption.

All main government office buildings at district and upazila levels, as well as facilities owned by Zila Parishads—including auditoriums, dak bungalows, and markets—must complete installations by 31 January 2027. The systems are required to include at least two hours of battery backup.

Funding for the initiative will be sourced from the Annual Development Programme or revenue budgets. Under the Net Metering Guideline 2025, Zila Parishads can generate additional income by supplying surplus electricity to the national grid at a rate of Tk 10.50 per unit. Financially self-sufficient Zila Parishads are expected to use their own funds, while those lacking resources will receive technical and financial assistance from enlisted electricity distribution utilities.
