Bangladesh measles outbreak causes 1,162 deaths

Bangladesh is facing a severe measles outbreak, with the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) reporting 1,162 total deaths from confirmed and suspected measles cases since March 15. In a recent 24-hour period, seven children died from measles or measles-like symptoms.

Total suspected cases have reached 205,028, while lab-confirmed infections stand at 22,421. The disease has spread to 58 of the country's 64 districts, having originated near the Myanmar border in Rohingya refugee camps.

Health experts and reports attribute the escalation to disruptions in routine immunization. Specifically, the previous interim government's decision in September 2025 to halt vaccine purchases through UNICEF in favor of an open tender process has been heavily criticized. Data indicates that in 2025, only 59 percent of eligible children received the measles vaccine.
