Bangladesh measles outbreak death toll nears 973

A measles outbreak in Bangladesh has escalated, with six additional child deaths reported on Monday. This brings the total number of confirmed and suspected deaths this year to approximately 973.

According to the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS), there were 94 new confirmed cases and 1,162 new suspected cases reported within a 24-hour period. Total confirmed cases have reached 19,312, while suspected cases have risen to 157,991.

The Global Center for Democratic Governance (GCDG) described the outbreak in its report, ‘Preventable Tragedy: Bangladesh 2026 Measles Outbreak’, noting that the crisis was epidemiologically predictable. The report suggests that disruptions in vaccine supply and health programs during the interim government led by Muhammad Yunus contributed to the crisis. Factors cited include administrative delays in vaccine procurement, the cancellation of supplementary immunization programs, and a shift from the UNICEF international supply system to an open tender system.
