Bangladesh measles outbreak death toll reaches 1,186

Bangladesh is facing a severe measles outbreak, described by health experts as one of the worst in recent history. According to the World Health Organization (WHO) and the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS), the death toll has climbed to 1,186, with 94 percent of those fatalities being children under the age of five.

Since the outbreak began in mid-March, approximately 202,000 suspected cases have been reported, including 22,000 laboratory-confirmed instances. The crisis has been exacerbated by a decline in routine immunization rates in 2025, falling below the 95 percent threshold required to prevent such outbreaks.

Experts attribute the scale of the epidemic to several factors, including weak data systems that failed to account for millions of children, inadequate outreach to parents, and gaps in vaccine procurement. While the government has reinstated vaccine procurement through UNICEF and initiated emergency vaccination drives, health officials warn that the high speed of transmission means the wave of infections and deaths may continue for at least another month.
