Bangladesh measles outbreak nears 1,000 child deaths
Bangladesh is facing a severe measles outbreak, with the child death toll nearing 1,000 since mid-March. According to the Directorate General of Health Services, 991 deaths have been recorded from measles and measles-like symptoms, including 100 confirmed measles fatalities. The Dhaka division has accounted for 464 of these deaths.
Health authorities report a massive surge in infections, with 163,105 symptomatic cases and 19,641 confirmed infections. Daily reports indicate more than 1,000 new suspected cases. The outbreak has placed significant strain on the healthcare system, with hospitals in Dhaka reporting overflowing wards and children requiring intensive oxygen support. Many patients are reportedly suffering from malnutrition, which exacerbates the severity of the disease.
The World Health Organisation (WHO) noted that Bangladesh has lost its historical herd immunity due to declining vaccination coverage. Factors contributing to the crisis include political instability and administrative disruptions that delayed vaccination programmes. In response, the government has launched mass vaccination drives, and Health and Family Welfare Minister Sardar Md Sakhawat Hossain announced that a new nationwide special vaccination campaign is scheduled to begin toward the end of September.
