Bangladesh's measles outbreak has killed 844 children, with 96 laboratory‑confirmed deaths and a total of 748 deaths showing measles‑like symptoms. The Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) reported 115 new confirmed cases in the latest 24‑hour period, raising the total confirmed infections to 16,295, and 1,022 new suspected cases, bringing the cumulative suspected count to 130,083. Since the outbreak began on 15 March 2024, more than 112,000 people have sought hospital treatment.
Humanitarian groups say the health crisis has severe economic repercussions: nine out of ten affected families have had to borrow money, spending an average of over US$130 on treatment and related costs, with some reporting expenses of around US$200 for ambulance transport. About 35% of surveyed families need financial help for medicines and 22% require food assistance.
Physicians at Bangladesh Shishu Hospital have also detected adenovirus co‑infection in measles patients, noting that the combination worsens complications. The hospital has informed DGHS, but no official response has been recorded. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has shown interest and sent experts to the hospital.
