Bangladesh and West Bengal brace for heavy monsoon rains

The Bangladesh Meteorological Department (BMD) issued a 120‑hour forecast warning of light to moderate rain and thundershowers across Rangpur, Rajshahi, Mymensingh, Dhaka, Khulna, Barishal, Chattogram and Sylhet divisions from 5 August to 8 August, with moderate to heavy rainfall possible in many areas. Temperatures are expected to dip slightly on the first two days, remain steady on 7 August, and rise modestly on 8 August. Recent observations recorded up to 94 mm of rain in Srimangal and 88 mm in Sylhet.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecast heavy rain in West Bengal until 7 August, especially over the south Bengal districts of Purba and Paschim Medinipur, Bankura, Kolkata, North and South 24 Parganas, Howrah, Jhargram, Purulia, Paschim Bardhaman, and the sub‑Himalayan districts of Darjeeling, Kalimpong, Jalpaiguri, Alipurduar and Cooch Behar. Basirhat recorded 111 mm of rain in a 24‑hour period, while Kolkata received 66 mm. The agency warned that the active monsoon and favourable wind patterns will sustain heavy downpours across the region.
