Bangladesh monsoon floods kill 51, displace over 1 million people
Heavy monsoon rains have triggered severe floods and landslides across southeast Bangladesh, killing at least 51 people and injuring 39. More than 1.02 million individuals are reported as affected, with roughly 35,000 displaced to temporary shelters and over 1,100 shelter centres opened.
The worst‑hit districts include Cox’s Bazar, Chattogram, Bandarban, Rangamati, Khagrachhari, Habiganj and Moulvibazar. In Cox’s Bazar, home to over a million Rohingya refugees, 28 deaths were recorded, and landslides in the camps have added to the toll. Authorities have mobilised the Bangladesh Border Guard, deployed boats with food, water and medicine, and the prime minister has ordered maximum alert and rapid relief distribution.
The disaster underscores growing vulnerability to extreme weather, which experts link to climate change, and highlights ongoing humanitarian concerns for the densely populated refugee settlements.
