Bangladesh navigates shifting foreign policy and regional alliances

Bangladesh faces complex foreign policy challenges as it attempts to balance regional relationships and expand its diplomatic reach. The administration under Prime Minister Tarique Rahman is navigating tensions with India, particularly regarding the extradition of Sheikh Hasina and recent diplomatic visits to Delhi. Maintaining strong ties with India remains critical for economic and energy security; bilateral trade reached approximately US$11.39 billion in FY2024–25, and India provides 15.6% of Bangladesh’s electricity.

To avoid over-reliance on South Asian dynamics, Bangladesh is seeking to diversify its alliances. This includes pursuing ASEAN Sectoral Dialogue Partner status and exploring interest in the Mecca Joint Defense Agreement involving Saudi Arabia, Turkey, and Pakistan. While expanding its geopolitical footprint offers opportunities to leverage its strategic location in the Bay of Bengal and its significant contribution to UN peacekeeping, analysts suggest the country must ensure these new alignments provide tangible mutual benefits rather than mere ceremonial engagement.
