Bangladesh NBR offers 5% tax rebate for returns filed by September 30

The National Board of Revenue (NBR) has announced a special tax rebate for taxpayers who submit their annual income tax returns by Wednesday, September 30. Under the new rules introduced in this year's budget, taxpayers can receive a 5 percent rebate on their payable tax, capped at a maximum of 25,000 BDT.

However, the rebate is subject to specific conditions. The discount applies only to the tax amount payable at the time of filing the return. It does not apply to taxes already paid throughout the year, such as advance income tax (AIT) deducted from savings certificate profits, tax withheld from bank FDR or DPS interest, or monthly income tax deducted from salaries.

This distinction has drawn criticism from some stakeholders who argue it creates inequality for those who consistently pay taxes in advance. According to NBR data, there are approximately 13 million Taxpayer Identification Number (TIN) holders in the country, with 450,000 returns filed during the first two months of the current fiscal year.
