Bangladesh opens July People's Revolt memorial museum in Dhaka

On 5 August 2024 the Bangladeshi government inaugurated the "July People's Revolt" memorial museum at Ganabhavan, the former official residence of the prime minister, in Dhaka. Prime Minister Tariq Rahman opened the museum, announced that government institutions will be renamed after the victims of the 2024 anti‑government protests, and pledged that those responsible for the killings will face “transparent, fair and reliable” trials. The museum commemorates the deaths of roughly 1,400 people recorded by the UN Human Rights Office during the July–August 2024 unrest that led to the ouster of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, who fled to India. Interim leader Mohammad Yunus attended the ceremony, and security forces were placed on high alert across the country, including deployments in Hasina’s home district.

The memorial marks the first anniversary of the coup that removed Hasina from power and seeks to institutionalise the memory of the protest victims while signalling the new administration’s commitment to rule of law.
