Bangladesh opposition rejects government claims of success amid ongoing crises

Opposition leaders in Bangladesh have rejected claims of success by the ruling Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) regarding its first 180 days in office. A Jamaat-e-Islami-led 11-party alliance and independent lawmakers have criticized the government for failing to address critical national issues.

Key grievances cited include a persistent energy crisis characterized by gas and electricity shortages, frequent load shedding, and rising fuel prices. Economic concerns were also highlighted, including the closure of over 900 factories and the loss of approximately 62,000 jobs, which critics argue contradicts election promises regarding employment.

Furthermore, the opposition pointed to a deteriorating law and order situation, citing incidents of enforced disappearances and killings. Alliance coordinator Hamidur Rahman Azad stated that the meeting of the 11-party alliance decided to intensify movements to protest public suffering, mismanagement, and a perceived constitutional crisis resulting from the failure to implement specific political charters.
