Bangladesh PM Tarique Rahman to seek Japanese aid and discuss India relations
Bangladesh Prime Minister Tarique Rahman is scheduled to visit Tokyo from October 26 to 29 at the invitation of Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi. During the visit, Dhaka aims to negotiate lower interest rates on Japanese loans for major infrastructure projects and seek $2 billion in assistance to mitigate energy import costs. Key projects under discussion include the Matarbari Integrated Development Initiative and MRT Line-1 and Line-5. Additionally, officials are addressing revenue-sharing disagreements regarding the Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport’s Third Terminal.
Separately, State Minister for Foreign Affairs Humaiun Kobir stated that Prime Minister Tarique Rahman has not ruled out a visit to India. Kobir emphasized that any such visit would occur through a formal bilateral framework and a conducive environment. While acknowledging existing challenges in India-Bangladesh ties, Kobir expressed hope that dialogue could resolve issues, including discussions regarding the Ganga Water Sharing Treaty, which is set to expire in December 2026. Dhaka has also requested reciprocity from India regarding political activities conducted from within each other's territories.
