Bangladesh Police Headquarters clarifies IGP comments on ‘crossfire’
The Bangladesh Police Headquarters has issued a clarification regarding remarks made by Inspector General of Police (IGP) Md. Ali Hossain Fakir concerning ‘crossfire’. During an event in Chawkbazar, the IGP stated that if crossfire becomes necessary and the government allows it, the police will proceed accordingly.
In a press release issued Monday evening, police headquarters explained that the IGP used the term ‘crossfire’ literally to emphasize the rigor of law enforcement against drug traffickers, terrorists, and extortionists. The statement clarified that he did not intend to advocate for extrajudicial killings or punishment outside the judicial process.
The IGP’s comments have drawn sharp criticism from political entities. Jamaat-e-Islami condemned the remarks, stating they contravene the constitution and the rule of law, warning that such rhetoric could foster a culture of fear. Similarly, the National Citizen Party (NCP) demanded the IGP’s removal, arguing that his statement could incite field-level officers to use illegal force and violate human rights.
