Bangladesh Power Development Board targets 689 MW of solar power by 2030

The Bangladesh Power Development Board (BPDB) has launched initiatives to install 689 megawatts of solar power capacity across the country by 2030 using its own funding. The board has completed feasibility studies, finalized development project proposals, and selected land for grid-connected solar panels.

A major 442-megawatt solar power project in Rampal has had its detailed project proposal submitted to the ministry for approval, with completion expected by 2030. Additionally, the Infrastructure Investment Facilitation Company (IIFC) has conducted a feasibility study for a 222-megawatt grid-connected solar photovoltaic plant in Sonagazi, Feni, which is targeted for implementation by 2028.

Regarding smaller-scale installations, the BPDB has already established 688 kilowatt-peak of rooftop solar systems. Further rooftop solar capacity totaling 4,195 kilowatt-peak is scheduled to be operational by December of this year. Existing rooftop systems are already producing power at locations including the Engineering Academy in Kaptai, training centers in Chittagong and Rajshahi, and the Khulna Power Plant.
