Bangladesh Premier League suspended for structural overhaul

The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) has suspended the Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) for the upcoming season to undergo a structural and financial overhaul. BCB President Tamim Iqbal announced that the tournament will not be held this year due to rule breaches by certain franchises, unpaid dues, and issues regarding bank guarantees.

According to Iqbal, the BCB has incurred losses of approximately $3.3 million (around 40 crore taka) over the past two years. He emphasized that franchise cricket should generate profit for the board rather than deplete its resources. The board intends to use this period to resolve systemic issues, including payment structures and operational standards, before committing to future editions.

The BCB is currently communicating with existing franchises and aims to complete a new franchise process by April or May of next year. The board has also indicated it is open to involving foreign franchises to ensure the tournament's long-term viability and success.
