Bangladesh President Shahabuddin steps down amid health concerns

Bangladesh President Mohammed Shahabuddin submitted his resignation on 24 July 2026, citing severe health problems. In his letter to Parliament Speaker Hafiz Uddin Ahmed he wrote, “I am seriously ill … therefore, I am unable to perform my duty of the constitutional post.” He also told reporters that recent medical examinations diagnosed him with Autonomic Neuropathy, a condition that can cause brief loss of consciousness.

Under Article 54 of the Bangladeshi Constitution, the Speaker automatically assumes the duties of Acting President, and a new president must be elected within 90 days. Speaker Ahmed confirmed he had accepted the resignation and will serve as interim head of state.

The resignation comes as former prime minister Sheikh Hasina, who is living in exile in India, announced plans to return to Bangladesh and surrender following a death‑sentence verdict. Shahabuddin, a longtime ally of Hasina, faced mounting pressure from the ruling Bangladesh Nationalist Party government to step aside. While the presidency is largely ceremonial, the vacancy heightens political uncertainty ahead of Hasina’s anticipated return and the upcoming parliamentary election.
