Bangladesh Prime Minister Tarique Rahman Rejects Extremism and Delays India Visit

Prime Minister Tarique Rahman told parliament that his government will not tolerate any form of extremism or radicalism and called for national unity to keep Bangladesh free of fascist or autocratic influences. He emphasized the need for a discrimination‑free, welfare‑oriented state and said the ruling and opposition parties share this commitment.

At the same time, Rahman has put off a planned state visit to India. The decision follows heightened diplomatic friction, including India’s lack of response to extending the Ganges water‑sharing treaty, border incidents, and the treatment of a senior Bangladeshi adviser at Delhi airport. Dhaka views the trust required for a high‑profile visit as absent, especially after Rahman’s recent trip to Beijing. Analysts say the postponement reflects broader tensions over unresolved water disputes and concerns about Indian influence on Bangladeshi politics.
