Bangladesh PM Tarique Rahman may visit India next week

Bangladesh Prime Minister Tarique Rahman may visit India as early as next week for a bilateral engagement, according to government sources. If the trip proceeds, it would mark his first official visit to India since assuming office following the Bangladesh Nationalist Party’s recent electoral victory.

While reports suggest preparations are underway in both capitals, Bangladesh’s State Minister for Foreign Affairs, Shama Obaed Islam, stated that the visit has not yet been finalized. She noted that the timing depends on the Prime Minister’s schedule and the progress of bilateral discussions. The potential visit comes ahead of the 18th BRICS Summit, scheduled for September 12-13, which Prime Minister Narendra Modi has invited Rahman to attend.

Recent diplomatic activity includes a meeting between Indian High Commissioner to Bangladesh Dinesh Trivedi and Prime Minister Rahman in Dhaka. The discussions aimed at strengthening bilateral partnerships and addressing regional cooperation.
