Bangladesh pushes Myanmar gas pipeline as trade talks expand

Bangladesh Power, Energy and Mineral Resources Minister Iqbal Hassan Mahmood proposed building a natural‑gas pipeline from Myanmar to Chattogram to alleviate growing domestic shortages. He said Bangladesh "faces substantial and growing demand for natural gas" and aims to move quickly, inviting Myanmar’s energy minister for bilateral talks and considering a visit to Myanmar. The proposal revives earlier regional plans and aligns with the China‑Myanmar‑Bangladesh economic corridor.

In a related meeting, Commerce Minister Khandakar Abdul Muktadir and Myanmar Ambassador Kyaw Soe Moe discussed expanding bilateral trade, resuming border commerce, establishing direct maritime connectivity, importing LNG and boosting investment. The dialogue also emphasized creating conditions for the safe, voluntary and dignified repatriation of Rohingya refugees, with verification of repatriation lists underway.
