Bangladesh raises nationwide security alert over potential terrorist threats

Bangladesh's police and security agencies have placed the country on a high alert after intelligence indicated possible terrorist or extremist attacks. The alert, issued by the Police Operations Control Branch, orders heightened protection for police and other government vehicles, including jeeps, trucks and buses, and increased monitoring of sensitive locations such as government institutions, major roads and crowded areas.

The alert comes ahead of the second anniversary of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s removal from power on 5 August, a period that authorities consider vulnerable to unrest. Recent incidents cited include a remote‑controlled explosive device found at Motijheel metro station and other suspicious items at metro stations in Dhaka. Home Minister Salihuddin Ahmed said investigations are ongoing, while the Counter‑Terrorism and Transnational Crime (CTTC) unit, led by Mohammad Shamsul Ha​k, emphasized that no specific plot has been confirmed but vigilance remains high. Citizens have been urged to report any suspicious activity and avoid spreading rumors.
