Bangladesh reports over 1,660 cases of violence against women in seven months
The rights organization Bangladesh Mohila Parishad reported that over 1,660 women and girls experienced various forms of violence in Bangladesh between January and July of this year. During a protest at the National Press Club in Dhaka, the group released data indicating that at least 1,667 women and children were victims of crime.
According to the figures, the violence included the murder of 83 girls and 258 women, as well as 292 cases of rape. The organization's president, Fauzia Muslim, noted that these statistics, which were compiled from only 14 newspapers, likely underrepresent the true scale of violence in the country.
Maleka Bano, the organization's general secretary, emphasized that women and children are currently unsafe across the country, facing various forms of abuse including murder and torture.
