Bangladesh requests extradition of Sheikh Hasina from India

Bangladesh Interior Minister Salahuddin Ahmad has confirmed that the government has sent multiple formal requests to India to extradite former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. These requests, sent through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, are based on existing extradition treaties to ensure she faces legal proceedings.

The announcement comes amid social media speculation regarding a potential return of the ousted leader to Bangladesh in December. Minister Ahmad stated that the government is aware of these discussions and emphasized that its position remains clear: the goal is to bring the former leader back to face justice.

The Minister also addressed concerns regarding potential instability, warning that ousted forces may attempt to create unrest to exploit the current situation. He asserted that the government would not allow fugitives or those involved in the killings of citizens to carry out further conspiracies in the country.

Regarding future governance, the Interior Minister noted that political consensus has been reached to hold the next national parliamentary election under a caretaker government system. He mentioned that while a Supreme Court ruling has paved the way for restoring this system, constitutional amendments via the legislature will be required to implement it.
