Bangladesh restores industrial gas supply after LNG terminal accident

Bangladesh is seeing a recovery in industrial gas supplies following a period of disruption caused by an accident at a floating liquefied natural gas (LNG) terminal. Prime Minister Tarique Rahman stated that the supply is expected to return to levels seen six weeks ago, noting that the technical issues at the terminal have been resolved.

Petrobangla officials confirmed that industrial consumers are being prioritized as supply levels rise. The shortage was attributed to a fire at a floating terminal in Maheshkhali, operated by the US-based company Excelerate, as well as delays in LNG cargo arrivals linked to conflicts in the Middle East. While LNG supply has stabilized, domestic gas field production has seen a decline of approximately 40 million cubic feet.

Despite the recovery, the government faces ongoing challenges. The Prime Minister described the energy crisis as a set of “inherited problems” that will require long-term implementation of new plans. Petrobangla and its subsidiary, RPGCL, are working to secure more LNG cargoes, though rising prices and tender challenges remain factors in the energy sector's roadmap.
