Bangladesh security concerns rise amid suspected Neo-JMB militant resurgence

Security concerns are rising in Bangladesh following a series of explosions and the recovery of numerous improvised explosive devices near Dhaka. Authorities have identified a pattern of activity in areas such as Savar and Ashulia, where at least 16 explosives, including pressure-cooker bombs and pipe bombs, were seized over a two-week period.

Investigators have linked these incidents to suspected operatives of Neo-Jamaat-ul Mujahideen Bangladesh (Neo-JMB), an ideological offshoot aligned with the Afghan Taliban. Reports suggest the group may be involved in at least 11 incidents since an explosion at a madrasa in Keraniganj in late December. The resurgence is being attributed to political volatility in 2024, which saw the breakdown of security machinery and the escape of over 2,000 prisoners, including seasoned militants, during attacks on 17 prisons.

Dhaka District SP Shamima Parveen confirmed that intelligence-led operations successfully recovered two destructive bombs after receiving information regarding militant presence in the area. While police have increased surveillance and patrols, questions remain regarding the source of explosive materials and the extent of the coordinated effort to reorganize militant networks.
