Bangladesh seeks $5 billion in US investment over five years
Bangladesh is seeking to attract an additional $5 billion in US investment over the next five years. During the 30th anniversary of the American Chamber of Commerce (AmCham) in Bangladesh, Commerce Minister Khandakar Abdul Muktadir stated that the government is prepared to work closely with American firms to expand economic opportunities, create jobs, and facilitate technology transfer.
Bilateral trade between Bangladesh and the United States has grown significantly, currently exceeding $13 billion. AmCham member companies have already invested over $5 billion in the country and contribute more than 20 percent of national revenue. Key sectors of interest for US investors include information technology, artificial intelligence, digital economy, cybersecurity, energy, healthcare, pharmaceuticals, and renewable energy.
However, challenges remain for foreign investors. Experts note that while tariff issues have seen temporary resolutions, administrative complexities, corruption, and energy and infrastructure shortages persist. There are also concerns regarding energy security, as recent government statements suggested uncertainty in gas and electricity supplies for the next two years, which may impact investor confidence. The government has signaled a move toward deregulation and a five-year tax roadmap to improve the investment climate.
