Bangladesh faces energy crisis, seeks diesel from India
Bangladesh is facing a severe energy crisis driven by a critical shortage of natural gas, which has caused electricity generation to fall to approximately 13,000 megawatts against a peak demand of 18,000 megawatts. To manage the shortfall, the government has ordered commercial establishments, including shops and malls, to close by 8 pm, though hospitals and food businesses are exempt.
In response to the fuel shortage, Bangladesh has requested additional diesel supplies from India. The Indian Ministry of External Affairs stated it is examining the request, noting that any decision will depend on India's own refining capacity and domestic requirements.
While the crisis has been exacerbated by a fire at an Excelerate Energy terminal in July, there has been some recent relief. The Summit LNG terminal has returned to full capacity, and Excelerate Energy has partially resumed operations, leading to a slight increase in gas supply. However, long-term financial pressure remains high; LNG imports cost Bangladesh $3.8 billion in 2025, and costs are projected to rise significantly as domestic gas reserves deplete.
