Bangladesh seeks extradition of Sheikh Hasina from India
Bangladesh has formally requested the extradition of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina from India. The request was raised during a meeting in Dhaka between Indian High Commissioner Dinesh Trivedi and Bangladeshi Prime Minister Tarique Rahman.
India’s Ministry of External Affairs stated that it is examining the extradition request in accordance with established legal procedures. The Indian High Commission described the meeting with Rahman as “fruitful,” noting intentions to work with the Bangladeshi government in a “positive, constructive and forward-looking manner.”
In addition to the Hasina request, Dhaka has sought the extradition of individuals allegedly involved in the murder of radical Islamist leader Sharif Osman Hadi. Indian authorities are currently investigating the case as a legal matter. The diplomatic discussions occur amid heightened tensions following a media appearance by Hasina in New Delhi, which the Bangladeshi government claimed hurt national sentiments.
