Bangladesh seizes $8 billion assets linked to former PM Sheikh Hasina
Bangladesh’s financial intelligence unit seized assets worth about 760 billion taka (approximately S$8 billion or RM25 billion) that are linked to former prime minister Sheikh Hasina, her family and ten business groups. Of the total, 570 billion taka was confiscated inside Bangladesh and another 190 billion taka was frozen abroad. The agency has opened 98 investigations covering Hasina, relatives and associated companies.
The probe began after Hasina was overthrown in an August 2024 popular uprising and fled to India. She faces multiple corruption, abuse of power and money‑laundering charges and has been sentenced in absentia to death for crimes against humanity. Bangladeshi officials say they are working to recover the money abroad and hope to report progress by the end of the year. The government is also seeking her extradition from India, while Indian authorities say the request is under review.
