Bangladesh study finds microplastics in most toothpastes, including children's brands
A year‑long investigation by the Environment and Social Development Organization (ESDO) examined 34 toothpaste samples representing 19 brands sold in Bangladesh. Laboratory analysis at Jahangirnagar University detected microplastic particles in 26 samples – about 76 percent – with counts ranging from 20 to 320 particles per 100 g. The highest concentration was found in Mediplus Fluoride Gel.
The study also revealed that four of six toothpaste products marketed for children contained microplastics. Samples originated from Bangladesh, India, Thailand and Vietnam, but packaging did not disclose any synthetic polymer content. Researchers used stereomicroscopy and FT‑IR spectroscopy and surveyed 2,760 consumers across the country.
Health experts caution that, while definitive evidence of absorption in the oral cavity is lacking, prolonged exposure could provoke inflammation, oxidative stress and gut‑microbiome disturbances. They recommend consumers read ingredient lists, choose formulations with hydrated silica or calcium carbonate abrasives, and consider low‑fluoride, SLS‑free options. ESDO plans to use the findings to develop national standards and regulatory measures for toothpaste safety.
