Bangladesh tank explosion kills two soldiers during training

Two Bangladesh Army soldiers were killed and a senior officer was critically injured following an explosion involving a Chinese-origin Type 59 tank during a live-fire exercise. The incident occurred on Wednesday at the Hathazari Field Firing Range in Chattogram.

The explosion reportedly happened during the firing sequence, causing immediate fatalities within the tank's combat compartment. The injured officer was airlifted to the Combined Military Hospital in Dhaka for emergency treatment.

The Inter-Services Public Relations Directorate (ISPR) has confirmed the accident and launched a formal technical inquiry. Investigators are examining several potential causes, including ammunition instability, mechanical failure such as a worn breech mechanism, or operational errors.

While official statements have not confirmed the specific sub-model of the tank, analysts suggest it may be a modernized variant like the Type 59G or Type 69-IIG. The incident has prompted discussions regarding the safety and maintenance of aging armored fleets used by regional militaries.
