Bangladesh tensions rise as ex‑PM Hasina plans New Delhi appearance amid India‑Bangladesh dispute

Two years after the July 2024 uprising that ousted Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, the former leader remains in exile in India and is set to speak at an online event in New Delhi hosted by the Foreign Correspondents’ Club of South Asia. Bangladesh’s foreign affairs minister warned India to clarify its stance, saying Hasina’s political activity from Indian soil could damage bilateral ties and that Dhaka would pursue the matter diplomatically. The government continues to seek Hasina’s extradition after a tribunal sentenced her to death for alleged crimes against humanity, a verdict the United Nations estimated linked to up to 1,400 deaths.

The post‑Hasina political landscape also sees the Islamist party Jamaat‑e‑Islami re‑entering parliament, raising concerns in India about a potential rise in religious extremism and recent attacks on minorities.
