Bangladesh to expand LNG infrastructure with two new terminals

Bangladesh plans to expand its liquefied natural gas (LNG) infrastructure by commissioning two new terminals to meet rising domestic demand. State Minister for Power, Energy and Mineral Resources Anindya Islam Amit announced that the country intends to launch a new floating storage and regasification unit (FSRU) on Moheshkhali Island by 2028, providing a capacity of approximately 600 million cubic feet per day (mmcfd).

Additionally, a land-based LNG import terminal is planned for Matarbari with a capacity of roughly 1,000 mmcfd, expected to be operational by 2030. These developments come as Bangladesh anticipates needing an additional 3–4 million tonnes per annum (mtpa) of LNG between 2026 and 2030, with requirements potentially rising to 17–18 mtpa by 2040.

Speaking at an international LNG conference in Tokyo, Minister Amit highlighted that domestic gas production is currently insufficient to support rapid industrialization and population growth. The expansion aims to enhance energy security and reliability amidst global market instability and geopolitical disruptions that have previously forced the country to rely on spot-market purchases and coal-fired generation.
