Bangor Air National Guard Base shortlisted for new KC-46A squadron

The Bangor Air National Guard Base has emerged as one of four remaining candidates in a nationwide selection process to host a new KC-46A refueling squadron. The announcement was made by Maine Senators Susan Collins and Angus King, noting that the base has progressed from an initial list of 14 potential sites.

The proposed KC-46A squadron would replace the existing KC-135 Stratotankers currently operated by the 101st Air Refueling Wing. According to the Air Force, the KC-46A offers enhanced capabilities in refueling, cargo transport, and aeromedical evacuation compared to the older models.

If Bangor is selected, the first aircraft are expected to arrive by 2030. The Air Force will conduct further site analyses on the four remaining candidates, with a final decision anticipated next year.
