Bangor, Maine, promotes leaving fallen leaves to support native pollinators
The City of Bangor, Maine, is encouraging residents to leave fallen leaves in their yards to support local ecosystems. As the first 'Bee City' affiliate in the state, Bangor aims to help sustain pollinator populations, including the thousands of native bee species in North America.
Scientific research suggests that leaf litter provides essential winter habitat and insulation. Up to 70% of native bee species nest in the ground, and many rely on dense leaf mulch or hollow plant stems to survive freezing temperatures. Raking and removing all foliage can destroy these crucial winter nurseries for insects, butterflies, and moths.
For residents who prefer a tidier appearance, experts suggest moving leaves into garden beds or around the bases of trees rather than bagging them for disposal. This practice allows the leaves to act as a nutrient-dense natural mulch that improves soil health and supports biodiversity.
