Banja Luka commemorates 1969 earthquake anniversary

Sirens sounded in Banja Luka at 09:11 to commemorate the devastating earthquake that struck the city on October 27, 1969. The disaster, which remains the strongest earthquake recorded in Bosnia and Herzegovina, followed a 5.6 magnitude tremor the previous day.

The main earthquake measured 6.6 on the Richter scale and reached an intensity of eight on the Mercalli scale. The catastrophe resulted in at least 15 deaths and injured over 1,100 people. The destruction was widespread, affecting approximately 86,000 residential units, as well as numerous schools, administrative buildings, cultural institutions, and healthcare facilities.

One of the most notable tragedies occurred at the “Titanic” building, a four-story structure that collapsed, causing multiple fatalities. In the aftermath, recovery efforts were supported by the Yugoslav People's Army and significant international solidarity, with aid arriving from across the former Yugoslavia, Europe, and the world.
