Banjarmasin prepares new waste regulations amid campus cleanup campaigns
During the 2026 World Cleanup Day campaign at Universitas Lambung Mangkurat (ULM), the Banjarmasin City Government announced plans to implement seven new waste management regulations. These regulations aim to address waste from upstream to downstream, including regional-scale management for educational areas, the hospitality sector, gas stations, and waste banks.
Deputy Coordinating Minister for Food, Hanif Faisol Nurofiq, expressed hope that ULM would become Indonesia’s first campus to achieve 100% independent waste management. The university plans to establish a student activity unit dedicated to waste management to support this goal.
In a separate community empowerment initiative, Universitas Mercu Buana (UMB) and the Ministry of Higher Education, Science, and Technology are working with the Anggrek Ceria Waste Bank in Jakarta. The program focuses on strengthening production, management, and marketing. A new real-time digital system is being introduced to allow customers to monitor transactions and savings balances via mobile phones, aiming to turn waste management into an economic opportunity.
