Bank deposits rise in Greece and Cyprus
Bank deposits in Greece and Cyprus have shown significant growth according to recent central bank data.
In Greece, total bank deposits rose by €19.1 billion during the 12 months ending June 2026, reaching a total of €223.565 billion. This 9.3% increase occurred despite a decline of nearly 300,000 accounts, resulting in a higher average balance per account of approximately €6,270. The Athens regional unit led the increase with a €13 billion jump, accounting for over two-thirds of the national rise. Western Attica saw the fastest percentage growth at 15%, while Piraeus recorded a €777 million increase in deposits.
In Cyprus, deposits at financial institutions increased by a net €562.3 million in July, bringing the total balance to €59.2 billion. This growth was primarily driven by Cyprus residents, with household and non-financial corporate deposits contributing significantly. During the same period, total loans in Cyprus declined by €68.7 million, largely due to €90 million in loan repayments by residents of other euro-area member states. The annual growth rate of deposits in Cyprus accelerated to 6.2 per cent.
